Emotion Coaching
Emotion coaching helps children learn to recognise feelings, understand what triggers them, and respond in healthy ways. At Oldfield Brow, we support our learners to build emotional skills alongside academic progress, so children can communicate clearly, manage frustration, and recover more quickly after upsetting moments.
In practice, emotion coaching means noticing emotions without dismissing them. Try to name what you observe (“You look disappointed”) and offer brief reassurance (“It makes sense to feel that way”). Then guide your child towards a next step, such as taking a breath, asking for help, or trying a different strategy, so feelings become an opportunity to learn rather than a reason to escalate.
For primary-aged children, consistency is key. Use calm, age-appropriate language, keep boundaries firm but kind, and follow up after incidents to reflect and practise. With patience and repetition, children begin to internalise these routines, improving self-regulation at home and supporting smoother days at school.
